About the Course

Chemistry 11 is designed to provide students with an introduction to the fundamental principles of matter and the chemical reactions that define our physical world. The curriculum focuses on the quantitative nature of chemistry, exploring the relationships between atoms, molecules, and the energy changes that occur during reactions. Students will engage in topics including the mole concept, stoichiometry, atomic theory, and the basics of organic chemistry to build a scientific framework for advanced study.

You Will be Able to know:

By the end of this course, you will develop the laboratory skills and theoretical knowledge required to analyze chemical compositions and reaction yields. You will be able to use the periodic table as a predictive tool for element behavior and apply mathematical precision to chemical calculations.

  • How to apply the mole concept to convert between mass, volume, and number of particles for various elements and compounds.
  • The principles of stoichiometry, featuring the use of balanced chemical equations to predict the amount of products and reactants in a system.
  • Atomic theory and the evolution of the atomic model, including the arrangement of electrons and the trends found within the periodic table.
  • The basics of organic chemistry, focusing on the naming and structure of hydrocarbons and the identification of various functional groups.

Prerequisite:

  • Prerequisites: Completion of Science 10
  • Graduation Status: One of the Grade 11/12 Science options required for graduation
  • Students who take Chemistry 11 are expected to have a functional understanding of basic chemical nomenclature and mathematical proportions from Science 10. It is a foundational course that provides the necessary background for Chemistry 12 and most university-level science programs.

Who Is This Course For?

  • Chemistry 11 is an academic course specifically designed for students who are curious about the molecular level of the universe and plan to pursue careers in health or natural sciences.
  • It is intended for students who possess strong analytical skills and wish to understand the chemical interactions that sustain life and industry.
  • This course pathway is ideal for those who enjoy hands-on laboratory work and are seeking to fulfill science requirements for post-secondary admission.
