About the Course

Japanese 10 is designed to provide students with the linguistic skills and cultural knowledge to communicate simply and effectively in a Japanese context. The curriculum focuses on the integration of the Hiragana, Katakana, and basic Kanji writing systems to foster literacy and creative expression. Students will engage in topics including Japanese daily life, seasonal celebrations, pop culture, and the social importance of politeness and formal registers.

By the end of this course, you will develop the ability to read and write several hundred characters and participate in basic conversations about your life and interests. You will be able to appreciate the unique aesthetics of Japanese culture and understand the role of language in shaping social harmony.

• How to use basic verb conjugations and adjectives to describe people, objects, and activities in both polite and casual forms.
• The cultural importance of gift-giving, traditional arts, and the concept of "wa" (harmony) in Japanese interpersonal relationships.
• Reading strategies for decoding simple narrative texts and identifying key information in menus, signs, and Japanese websites.
• Writing skills for composing short letters, diary entries, and descriptions using a combination of the three Japanese scripts.

• Prerequisites: Completion of Japanese 9
• Graduation Status: One of the Grade 10 elective options that contributes to Language credits
• Students who take Japanese 10 are expected to be proficient in reading and writing Hiragana and Katakana from their Grade 9 studies. This course is the essential foundation for students moving toward Japanese 11 and more advanced language mastery.
