Japanese 11 is designed to provide students with the linguistic tools to communicate in Japanese while deepening their appreciation for the country's unique social customs. The curriculum focuses on the integration of Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana to improve reading and writing fluency in both formal and informal registers. Students will engage in topics including Japanese school life, traditional festivals, pop culture, and the importance of polite language in Japanese society.

By the end of this course, you will develop the ability to handle more complex social interactions and understand the subtle cultural cues embedded in the Japanese language. You will be able to read and write a significant number of Kanji and use them to interpret authentic materials such as blogs and menus.
- How to use various verb forms and sentence ending particles to convey different levels of politeness and social distance (Te-form, Short form, etc.).
- The relationship between the Japanese language and cultural values like harmony, respect, and the distinction between public and private faces.
- Advanced reading strategies for understanding narrative texts and instructional materials written in a combination of the three Japanese scripts.
- Writing skills for composing coherent emails, essays, and journals that reflect a growing mastery of Japanese grammar and vocabulary.
Prerequisite:
- Prerequisites: Completion of Japanese 10
- Graduation Status: One of the Grade 11/12 elective options that can satisfy Language requirements
- Students who take Japanese 11 are expected to have mastered the two phonetic scripts and basic Kanji characters from previous years. This course is essential for students who wish to pursue the advanced study of Japanese in Grade 12 or at the post-secondary level.
